Being a new fan to Face off, created an entire new eye opener for me. In terms of my final project, I wanted to produce a transformation look of my model before and after make up has been applied. The concept is to determine whether practical effects work better then Digital effects. Eventhough the makeups to teh right are all practical, digital effects are used to create this transformation stages.
I have researched into Timelapse, and how it works, and also talked to a student who specialises in photography, and was explained the software that is used to create this effect.
The timelapse on the videos of face off however, have added extra effects in the making to create things like the horns , the effect of them growing out of the crates made as normal effects wouldnt be able to show the making of the horns ( they would be pre-made) and directly applied to the model, these effects are impossible to create without the use of digital effects.
The idea of getting such inspiration from these transformations, helps with my progression of work. It also gives me ideas of the types of characters I could produce without them being too difficult to produce.
There are so many series of the transformations, I picked 6 , although I would have loved to have filled the entire page with all of them, but I chose only my favourite clips.
Whilst some are amazingly presented and others are only subtle, it's great to see the variations in makeup artists concepts. Some have gone big, whilst others have stuck to producing small creations.
I loved this video in particular, I spent ages searching through various videos and came across this. A video which demonstrates the actresses/actors performance in makeup, and showing how they look as a whole on stage. Again this leads to my disseration " Does wearing practical effects make it easier to get into character?", seeing a different person to what you usually would look like gives you the sense of acting like the character you are meant to be.

Face Off
Each week, the artists face a "Spotlight Challenge" that tests their artistry and techniques to create a full makeup character to match a theme over the course of 3 days. The first day allows for concept design and sculpting for five hours, a second day of 10 hours for work in finishing the molding, and a final day of 4 hours in applying the makeup before a one hour "Last Looks" for touch ups. The judges then have the opportunity to look at the makeups from afar and up close, and decide a series of top and bottom looks for the week. One artist will be deemed the winner, sometimes receiving a special bonus prize such as immunity from elimination or a cash reward, and one artist will be eliminated from the running for the grand prize. Some episodes also feature a "Foundation Challenge", a smaller challenge that introduces a new technique on a smaller scale, and the winner is awarded an advantage for that week's Spotlight Challenge, ranging from immunity from elimination to receiving a first choice of theme.
