In 1944, in the post-Civil War in Spain, rebels still fight in the mountains against the falangist troops. The young and imaginative Ofelia travels with her pregnant and sick mother Carmen Vidal to the country to meet and live with her stepfather, the sadistic and cruel Captain Vidal, in an old mill. During the night, Ofelia meets a fairy and together they go to a pit in the center of a maze where they meet a faun that tells that she is a princess from a kingdom in the underground. He also tells that her father is waiting for her, but she needs to accomplish three gruesome, tough and dangerous assignments first. Meanwhile, she becomes friend of the servant Mercedes, who is the sister of one of the rebels and actually is giving support to the group. In a dark, harsh and violent world, Ofelia lives her magical world trying to survive her tasks and sees her father and king again.

Despite this film being in a differnt language, the use of practical effects was amazing. I remember the guy wearing this prosthetic , saying he couldn't see anything bar a slight be directly in front of him, but couldn't see anything other than that. CGI legs were used when he was walking / running awkwardly after the girl, as the effect they wanted wouldn't of worked with prosthetic legs.  The use of eyes in the hands was also a very strange idea,  but also very clever.

Pan's Labyrinth

I came across Pan's labyrinth upon researching into fauns and representations of fauns that people had made. When I came across this animatronic faun, I loved the textures and symbols that were represented on the forehead, and it made me think on ideas of what I could create on my prosthetic sculpt.

This isn't my type of film that id watch, but I did watch a bit of it, and I was having a hard time understanding what was happening. The entire film seemed a bit bizarre for my liking, and the uncomfortable feeling I experience whilst watching it, is something I wouldn't want again. I always tend to not like specific characters that are created in a bizarre way, especially creapy. I loved the faun as a whole, but not the creapy character with the eyes in his hand, but again, the research side of things gave me ideas for a next project. The shape of the fauns face, horns and facial hair gave the impression that it was male, and the appearance it gave did look male, I wanted to create a female version of this faun,  but in makeup form rather thanan animatronic.

A behind the scenes of the Faun animatronic and attire.  I always love the before/after of how it was made, the stages they took to get to the end result. I absolutely loved the sculpt, it was just a shame that they made it into an animtronic, rather than a facial application.
