During my project, I got into contact with various prosthetics artists within the industry to get some help and advice with my project. Although the project allowed us to do our own research and work independently, it was always a struggle to find ways around the problems you encounter. This also allowed me to communicate with others that I had never spoken to before. Some appeared more helpful than others, and some even added me to give me some guidance to reassure me that I was moving in the right direction, which was incredibly helpful toward me project. Various Facbook groups allow you to post what you are looking to create, or to even show off work that has already been created and get some feedback. This page was called " Special Effects, Prosthetics Make-up and All things Practical " .
This was my first post I put on the prosthetics page, and within a matter of a few hours, it already hit a staggering " 235" likes, which shocked me. Many assumed the work was mine ( which I did explain in my description that it was Bill Turpins work) . I had many people message me back, particularly "Dalton Dale" who appeared very helpful, and started messaging me with all sorts of methods I could experiment with to create a final outcome like the hoof hand. I explained my concept, and what I was hoping to create for my final outcome, the attention of posting it was to hopefully gain a lot of information and advice from those that have done something similiar, that could guide me onto the right path.
Here was a few responses I got, and some helpful links to videos that people recommended to watch. It was also nice to see someone that was so willing to give advice in a massive bulk and explain each process after giving him the pictures of what I had made so far.
This was the seoond post I made, I was told on my previous post to update those who were interested in my project, so I decided to post a few pictures of my sculpts in progress and hoped for feedback, which again was given.
This was the most recent one I posted, asking for some help and guidance as to how to mold the ears. There were so many different methods of how it could be done, but I wanted it to be perfect the first time as it was a few weeks before the deadline, so I just wanted to experiment with some simple molding, whether it be plaster, silicone, or fibreglass. Most said to do a 2-part mold out of plaster, and a current student mentioned making molds from them using tinsil to create the mold, and then use that mold as a slush mold.
Good ol' Bill Turpin
After knowing a bit about Bill Turpin, I decided to go onto his official website and get his contact email so I could ask him some quick queries and hope for a response back in relation to my project.
Bill Turpin, such a lovely man! and such an inspiration to my work. He responded to my email within the hour, and sent all these images above of the steps he took to make his prosthetic hand. But when I looked at the steps he did to make it, I realised this was an entire prosthetic hand, not an application makeup, so I decided to message him again and explain what I wanted to make. He did ask me to ring him to talk to him via phonecall, but at the time I was suffering with the flu so I had lost my voice, which was a real shame as It would of been a real privelege to speak to someone that has inspired me in prosthetics for a few years.
Communication....
